The Monk Who Paid Full Price
A monk walked into a bustling market and pointed to a robe hanging in a shop.
The shopkeeper recognized him. “You’re a holy man,” he said. “You meditate, teach, and live simply. I’ll give you a 50% discount.”
The monk shook his head. “Charge me full price.”
The shopkeeper was surprised. “Why?”
The monk smiled, “Because when you undercharge me, you overcharge someone else. I want my peace. And I want yours too.”
He paid the full amount and walked away.
The monk was not negotiating for his own benefit—he was holding space for equity in the system. This is a radical act of conscious accountability. In a world driven by margins and cost-cutting, this story reminds us: True wisdom doesn’t exploit goodwill—it protects it.
In leadership, every shortcut has a downstream cost.
🌼 When you favour a vendor who cuts corners, you transfer that cost to your brand.
🌼 When you let a top performer bend the rules, others absorb the consequence.
🌼 When you reward someone unfairly, you demotivate everyone else quietly.
The monk doesn’t just protect his own peace—he ensures the peace of the entire ecosystem.
In business negotiations, It’s tempting to push hard for the best deal possible. But when you win at someone else’s loss, you sow resentment—and burn long-term bridges. “You can win fast, or win forever. Choose wisely.”
